The failures we see most on 70-pin ECMs

1. Injector driver failure — dead cylinder or miss

What you see: a dead hole or steady miss on one cylinder, injector circuit codes, or a miss that stays on the same cylinder after you swap injectors.

What's happening: the driver stage inside the ECM that fires that injector has failed. The injector and wiring are fine — the module just isn't firing the hole.

The tell: swap two injectors. If the miss follows the injector, it's the injector. If it stays on the cylinder, look at wiring first, then the ECM. This is the single most common repairable failure on these modules.

2. Runs fine, but Cat ET won't communicate

What you see: the truck starts and runs like nothing's wrong, but ET (or any diagnostic tool) can't connect. You can't read codes, can't reprogram, can't pass a required update.

What's happening: the data link section of the module has failed while the engine-control side keeps working. The engine will run this way for a long time — until the day you need to talk to it.

The tell: verify your adapter and data link wiring on another truck first. If the link and tool are good and the module still won't answer, the ECM's communication circuit is down. Repairable on the bench.

3. A pile of sensor codes all at once

What you see: several unrelated sensor codes set together — throttle position, pressure sensors, temperature sensors — often with the engine derated or running rough.

What's happening: those sensors share a regulated 5-volt supply from the ECM. One shorted sensor or chafed harness can drag the supply down and take every sensor on that circuit with it — or the supply inside the ECM has failed.

The tell: unplug the shared-supply sensors one at a time. If the codes clear when one sensor comes off, that sensor or its wiring is shorting the supply. If the 5-volt reference is dead at every connector with everything unplugged, the ECM's supply has failed.

4. No start, no power-up, ECM dead

What you see: no communication, no codes, cranks with no injection — the module acts completely dead.

What's happening: either the ECM isn't getting power and ground, or its internal power supply has failed. Jump starts and welding on the frame without disconnecting the batteries are classic ways these get hurt.

The tell: before anything else, check battery voltage and ground at the ECM connector pins and check the ECM fuses. A surprising number of "dead ECMs" are a corroded ground or a blown fuse. If power and ground are clean at the pins and it's still dead, the module is the problem.

5. Intermittent shutdowns or lost parameters

What you see: the engine cuts out over bumps and restarts, or the ECM drops its customer parameters and asks to be reprogrammed after a fault.

What's happening: intermittents are usually a chafed harness or loose pin — but when the wiring checks out, cracked internal connections inside the module do the same thing. Lost parameters point at the ECM's internal memory.

What we do: we recover and reload customer parameters as part of the rebuild, so the module goes back in programmed to your engine.

Rule of thumb: power, grounds, and harness first — module second. We bench-test every unit before quoting, so if the ECM isn't your problem, we'll tell you that too.
