What to check, in order

1. Rule out the tool first

Connect the same adapter and laptop to a known-good Cat engine. If it will not connect there either, the problem is your adapter, driver, or cable.

Confirm the software and adapter combination is supported for that engine. A mismatched driver looks like a dead ECM.

2. Then the data link

Check the diagnostic connector for power and ground, then the data link wires back to the ECM for corrosion, chafing or a pushed-out pin.

A bad connector or a broken data link wire is cheaper than a module. Rule it out.

3. When the module will not answer

Adapter and wiring check out, the engine may even run normally, and the module still will not connect. That points at the ECM itself.

The engine can run like this for a long time, until you need to read codes, change parameters or get past an emissions or update requirement.

Rule of thumb: power, grounds, and harness first, module second. We bench-test every unit, so if the ECM isn't your problem, we'll tell you that too.

Cat 70-pin ECM repair: flat $525

Ship it in, get it back working

Component-level repair, bench test, and your original programming stays with your module. About 3 to 5 days on the bench. You pay the repair price at checkout, before you ship it. Any normal failure we can't fix, you get a full refund. The exceptions are when the ECM itself is the reason: a board that is cracked, burned, or eaten by water and corrosion, a proprietary chip that is no longer made, or damage from an earlier repair attempt. In those cases, and if your ECM tests good with nothing wrong, $150 covers the bench test, the written report and the return shipping, and we refund the rest.

Common questions

My Cat runs fine but Cat ET won't connect. Do I need a new ECM?

Not necessarily a new one. Rule out the adapter and data link first. If those are good and the module still will not answer, the ECM can be repaired.

Will you keep my parameters?

Yes. Your original programming stays with your module through the repair.

How long does the repair take?

About 3 to 5 days on the bench for a Cat 70-pin ECM, plus shipping both ways.
