We repair Cummins ECMs every day: ISB, ISC, ISM, and ISX from the CM870 and CM871 through the CM2350, and we replace Celect and Celect Plus on the N14 and M11. If your ECM is doing one of the things below, there is a good chance we fixed the same thing this week. Most of it is repairable.
These show up across these ECMs week in and week out. If your symptom is on this list, that is good news. It means we have seen it before and it is fixable.
What you see: a dead hole or misfire, a cylinder that drops out, or a rough run that follows the ECM and not the injector.
What's happening: a shorted injector or chafed harness wire fed a fault back into the module and burned the driver circuit, usually starting as one dead cylinder.
What we do: we rebuild the driver circuitry and bench-test every injector channel before it ships back, so you are not chasing the same dead hole again.
What you see: the truck cranks but the ECM will not talk to INSITE or your laptop, even with good power and ground.
What's happening: the internal power supply or processor section of the module has failed, often after a jump-start spike, low voltage, or age. That is a board-level fault, not your wiring.
What we do: we trace the dead spot, restore the power and communication side on the bench, and the crank-no-start clears.
What you see: a unit that acts up hot and starts fine cold, drops in and out of communication, or shuts down and restarts after it cools.
What's happening: years of heat cycling and engine vibration crack the solder joints inside the module, throwing codes that come and go.
What we do: we reflow and replace the failed joints and parts, then heat-soak and bench-test the unit before it goes back.
What you see: on a Celect or Celect Plus N14 or M11, an ECM that took itself out, blows a fuse, or will not power up.
What's happening: a shorted fuel-shutoff solenoid dragged down the ECM power feed and the module cooked its own power circuit trying to hold voltage.
What we do: Celect and Celect Plus go out as a tested remanufactured replacement programmed to your engine, $1,950 exchange.
Don't see your exact symptom? Send it in anyway. These are the common ones, but these ECMs fail in other ways too, and we test every unit before we tell you what is going on.
