Is this your ECM?

You do not need the part number to get started. Count the plugs.

Two 70-pin plugs: this is the one

That is the ADEM III engine ECM, used on Cat machines and engines from about 1998 to 2006. It is in our fast lane at 3 to 5 days on the bench.

The part number is printed on a label on most of these. If there is no label, look for numbers stamped into the housing. No numbers at all? Send it anyway with your machine model and engine serial number, and we identify it on the bench.

One 120-pin plug and one 70-pin

That is the later ADEM A4. We repair those too, 15 to 30 days right now. Start a repair and pick ADEM A4.

Two 40-pin plugs

That is the older ADEM II. We repair those too, 15 to 30 days right now, $745 with the $350 bench fee credited. Most 40-pin units have no label: the part number is stamped into the housing, so send a photo of the stamped numbers or start a repair and pick ADEM II. If you need it sooner, ask about an exchange.

The failures we see most

Battery died, now it won't start

What you see: the batteries went dead on the machine, or it got jump started, and now it cranks and won't fire, or it won't do anything at all. It ran fine before the batteries died.

What we do: check the ECM fuses and battery cables first. If those are good, send the ECM in. We get it powering up again and test it on the bench before it goes back.

Dead cylinder that survives an injector swap

What you see: one hole down on the cutout test, a miss under load, low power. You replaced the injector and it is still there.

What we do: we repair the ECM and test every injector channel on the bench before it ships.

Runs, but Cat ET will not connect

What you see: the machine runs but the service tool will not talk to the engine ECM.

What we do: we restore communication on the bench so the ECM can be read again.

No power-up after a jump start or welding

What you see: dead ECM after a jump, a battery swap, or welding on the machine. Sometimes it is intermittent first.

What we do: we repair it at the component level and test it under load before it goes back.

Don't see your exact symptom? Send it in anyway. We bench-test every unit before we tell you what's going on, and if we fix it the diagnostic cost you nothing.

Part numbers and machines

These are the ADEM III engine ECM part numbers and where Cat lists them. Cat used more than one ECM on some of these models over the years, so go by the plugs: two 70-pin plugs means it is one of these.

Not on the list? If it has two 70-pin plugs, send it. Truck part numbers such as 157-3705, 179-4899, 223-1235 and 256-1159 are the same family.

Questions we get on equipment ECMs

What if you can't fix my ECM?

On a 70-pin unit, you get a full refund when it is a normal failure we could not fix. We fix the large majority of the 70-pin ECMs that come in. The exceptions are when the ECM itself is the reason: a board that is cracked, burned, or eaten by water and corrosion, a proprietary chip that is no longer made, or damage from an earlier repair attempt. In those cases, and if your ECM tests good with nothing wrong, $150 covers the bench test, the written report and the return shipping, and we refund the rest. You can also put what you paid toward a tested exchange unit.

How much does a Cat equipment ECM repair cost?

$525 flat with the bench fee included, the same price as our truck Cat 70-pin repairs. You pay the repair price at checkout, before you ship it. If we can't fix it, you get a full refund, unless the board itself is damaged beyond repair, a part is no longer made, or it tests good. Then $150 covers the bench test, the report and return shipping, and we refund the rest.

How long does it take?

Cat ADEM III ECMs with two 70-pin plugs are 3 to 5 days on the bench right now, plus 1-3 days return shipping. Need it sooner? Add rush priority at checkout and your ECM goes to the front of the line.

How do I know if my machine has this ECM?

Look at the engine ECM. If it has two plugs and each one is a 70-pin, it is the ADEM III and it is in our fast lane. If one plug is a larger 120-pin, it is the later ADEM A4, which we also repair in 15 to 30 days.

The label is gone. Can you still fix it?

Yes. A lot of these come in with no label left on them. Send it in with the machine model and engine serial number if you have them, and we identify the ECM on the bench.

Will it still work in my machine when it comes back?

Yes. We repair your own ECM, so it comes back with its own software and settings and goes back into the same machine.
